About Cosmic Rays:
The Cosmic Rays Experimental Film Festival is an annual celebration of non-commercial short films, live-cinema, and new media projects. The festival provides audiences in the Triangle region of North Carolina and across the Southeastern United States access to work that expands our idea of what media art is and what it can be.
Cosmic Rays celebrates work that extends the artistic possibilities of cinema and new media technologies; that explores the lyrical and poetic dimensions of media; that speaks with a personal voice; that challenges audience expectations of cinema form and content; that arises from a diversity of life experiences, identities, and communities; and that questions conventional models of production, exhibition, and distribution.
The Cosmic Rays Experimental Film Festival was founded in 2017 by Sabine Gruffat and Bill Brown, media artists and professors of art and media production at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Gruffat and Brown started Cosmic Rays in response to the lack of experimental film and media art programming available to audiences in the Triangle region of North Carolina. In addition, Gruffat and Brown hoped to foster and provide a resource for the community of experimental media makers working in this region, and to support the larger national and international field of experimental media makers for whom there are ever fewer exhibition venues dedicated to cinema art and experimental modes of media production.
