Italian-American widow Loretta (Cher, who won an Oscar for her performance) accepts a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend Johnny (Danny Aiello), only to find herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage). She tries to resist but Ronny, who blames his brother for his own disfigurement, has no scruples in aggressively pursuing her. As Loretta falls deeper in love, she comes to learn that she’s not the only one in her family with a secret romance. John Patrick Shanley’s original screenplay also won an Academy Award.
